I understand that changes in Marketing Channel Rules are not retroactive.
But what if I want to change the Marketing Channel name only - will the new name overwrite the old one for the past visits?

Yes, When it comes to renaming Marketing Channel, its retroactive and as you change the name of the channel you would be able to see the changed name in the Marketing Channel report.
