Stock Status appearing as Unspecified

Some of our products in Analytics are showing a stock status of unspecified. Under what conditions can this happen? I am also seeing that the same product sku is appearing in both the "unspecified" group and "in stock" group with different amounts of orders and revenue. Is the tag not being capture properly on our site?
