Workspace Auto-Save...Please?

Hey Team-

There is a pain-point that has been particularly excruciating for me. There have been several times, for one reason or another, the work I have done on a WS project has not been saved and is now gone forever. Surely, I am not the only one who has experienced this.

Could your team provide a SAVE-ty net? Auto-save is a feature that I would appreciate immensely.

Thank you in advance!

I have just lost a whole day of work, receiving an error  after putting my PC into sleep mode. While I could see the changes on screen, the web-app told me the changes could not be saved and that I should refresh the window and do it again. I didn't imagine Analytics would actually erase all my built segments and work on refresh. Why am I not getting a pop-up with the option of recovering lost changes (considering it was an old, and not a new project)?

Thanks for clarifying the need here, we will give new project auto-saving some thought & add to our backlog.

Hey jen.lasser!

It look like @ursboller and I are thinking with the same brain. You guys have got this covered. Most of my frustrations have come when creating a new project.

Ideally, I think new projects would share the same 2 minute save functionality with the name "New Project" or "New Project (1)", etc. Then, if the worst should happen and the machine crashes, as you described above, it could "As you open each one, it will give you the "unsaved changes" pop-up".

So basically, unsaved projects would act just like saved projects, except your team would give them a default name.

Thanks for looking into this. It will save a lot of time for a lot of users (or just a few semi-forgetful users like me ).

What I described is the existing behavior today, so it's already out there! Regarding your other questions:

a) We can certainly consider that.

b) Creating a project from a template is considered creating a new project.

c) They should all recover. As you open each one, it will give you the "unsaved changes" pop-up that we show today. If you aren't seeing that behavior, please file a Customer Care ticket for us to look into!

hi jen.lasser

you're solution would be great! go for it

just a few remarks/additional questions:

a) any chance to have an auto-save for brand new projects? or at least a pop-up after 5 (or 10) mins asking to save the project ...

b) what happens if I create a new project based on a template? is this a "brand new" project or handled as an existing project?

c) what happens in a multi-tab situation, when I have multible browser tabs all with an open (and changed) project? are they all recovered or just the one I looked at bust before the crash?

Thanks for filing this idea! Below is what we do for auto-saving today. Can you elaborate on what more you are looking for us to add?

  • If a project is already saved, we save the current unsaved state of a project to the local machine every 2 minutes.  If the browser crashes or there is a session timeout, upon returning to Workspace, the user will get a “project recovery” popup which restores from the locally saved copy.
    • If the user ever deliberately leaves Workspace (ie, navigates away or closes the tab), we provide the option to save before leaving the page. After leaving the page, we wipe out the auto-saved local copies.

  • If the project is brand new and has never been saved before, we do not auto-save.

Thanks!

but please do not auto-save with the same project id! I often open an existing project and investigate "just for fun". in those cases I don't want the project to be changed, it's more "do an adhoc investigation" on a certain topic or data point. and I don't want to mess the "old" project!

if my investigation is interesting enough I want to decide either overwrite existing project OR "save as" a new project with a hint about the investigation.
