I have done some searching and I can not find the documentation on giving access through tagging in comments. Am I correct in thinking that you can only give View access this way? Or is there any other sharing access you can give by tagging users in updates?
Correct. I'm unaware of configuring any higher access for a tag. But there are other triggers that can give more than View access. Find those triggers in the Project Actions > Access section. For example, you can assign someone to a task and grant them certain access to the project.
