Filter group, text mode and OR operator in WLB filters

Hi All,

I am trying to create complex filters in Workload Balancer that include filters on different fields, combined with AND and OR operators, such as:

(Field A = X  AND  Field B = Y)  OR  Field B = Z  OR  (Field A = W  AND  Field C contains abc)

 

This article explains that this can be achieved in the new (now standard) filter builder by adding a "Filter group" and by changing "Include if all are true" to "Include if any are true", or potentially using Text mode:

However, I don't have any of these in my standard filter builder UI.

The article mentions these are "conditional" and "optional", but doesn't tell what the condition is.

Can anyone please tell me how I can get / use these features?

 

Alternatively, is there any way to build a filter on a report (using the legacy filter builder interface) and then making that filter available in the Workload Balancer?

First off, great question (good use of materials and good points). I've notified the tech writers by leaving a comment on the help article you referenced. 

 

Second, I tend to read "optional" and "conditional" in a similar vein.

 

Optional: The writers appear to be saying, "if you want to do this, please read this next point, otherwise, skip to the next point". So "(Optional) Click the Delete icon" means, click it if you want to (I guess).

 

Conditional: writers appear to be saying, depending on what you want to do, do one of these two things. So, "(Conditional) Depending on whether you want to find objects that match all or any of the statements in a filter group, select from the following options:" the two conditions to pick from are:

  • you want to find objects that match all of the statements in a filter group
  • you want to find objects that match any of the statements in a filter group

i.e. you won't follow every instruction on this point, just the instructions that you pick.

 

Lastly, workload balancer filters don't work in the same way as regular filters (I don't know if this is broken or just how it is). You *can* submit a helpdesk ticket (and I recommend you do), asking questions like, "is it intentional...". Like, was it intended that I cannot switch into text mode, and was it intended that I not be able to build complex filters by switching between AND and OR.
