Custom Authentication Handler - User accounts w/ no passwords

I want to create a custom authentication handler.

I noticed that the OOTB Facebook integration is creating accounts under /home/users/community however the accounts have no passwords.

I would like to implement similar behaviour however cannot find any information about how these accounts are created (with no passwords) etc.

Can anyone shed some light?
