how content flows from author to publish instance

Hi Guys!

Pretty new here. Just want to know what it means to have an author instance where content is created and post approval or something, the content can be published to publish instance.

Is there an in-built mechanism which does this? How do we configure a publish instance for an author instance?

Regards,
