Integration Patterns with AEM

Hi,

I have a architecture capability question rather than a specific coding question.

I'm looking into options around migrating to AEM in an already complex estate. A big bang move is not an option. So my question is...can AEM act as a server-side aggregator of content from existing sites as opposed to clunky client side aggregation?

As a generic follow up: is there a publication describing integration patterns for those of us with existing content?
