Reclamiming Disk Space (5.6.1)

Hello

Our JCR was growing with versioned pacakges.  I've removed/deleted these packages from the JCR using CRXDE however the physcial disk space the JCR is occupying hasn't changed.  More importantly neither has the backup?  I've tried garbage collection (which returns 'null') and tar optimisation but neither seemed to help?

Any suggestions?
