Adding GTM to Email template

Can I add Google Tag Manager tracking to my email template? I thought I could (to better track the traffic and not see it as "direct" in Google Analytics), but now I see a "Marketo does not allow javascript or script tags in email HTML Please refresh your browser." error in my master Email Template. Is this possible or since it's js it won't work?

If it won't work then are UTM tags my only path to see email traffic in GA as email rather than direct since it will be coming as a redirect through my tracking link subdomain?

You categorically cannot -- must not -- include <script> tags in an email.

UTM tags are your friends.
