Changing SFDC Field Type from Text Area to Text

Sorry for asking a Saleforce question but it's in service of Marketo operations. Does anyone know if data in a Text Area field will definitely be destroyed it the field type is changed to text - even if there are no records with values longer than 255 characters in the field?

Update: At least in our case - the data was not destroyed when we made this change (we exported the records first, just in case).
