Custom Activities Primary Field - unique identifier or no?

We are looking at setting up Custom Activities. We've reviewed the product docs and most of it seems to make sense. But one thing we're struggling with...we have to create a "primary field". From my work with Custom Objects, I thought this might be the unique identifier that ties it back to a particular lead in Marketo. Is that the case?

If not, then how does Marketo know which Custom Activities are tied to which leads? Are we thinking about this in the wrong way?

Thanks, Phil

Hey @Phillip Wild,

The primary field when creating the custom activity is the "thing" that the activity relates to - the concept is clearer when you consider some standard activities as examples:

  • For "Visits Webpage" the primary field would be "web page"
  • For "Fills out Form" the primary field would be "form"
  • For "Opens Email" the primary field would be "email"

The custom activity is inherently linked to the person object (as all Marketo activities occur in the person context) and are associated by including the Marketo Lead ID when you insert the individual activity records. You do not need to identify a linking field as you do when setting up a custom object.

Thanks Justin, that makes perfect sense.
