How long are emails saved in Marketo?

We're just getting started with a new newsletter that is sent through Marketo. I'm trying to figure out the easiest way to archive the newsletters on our web site, and had the idea of linking to them (using the View as web page link). However, I can't find any info about how long an email is stored/saved in Marketo. I obviously need to know that before I decide if this is a good or bad way to archive our newsletters.

Hi Sarah,

I download the HTML for the email (by clicking the View as a webpage) and view the source code, copy and put it onto a blank template landing page in Marketo. Then I link my website newsletter archives to each landing page instead. http://www.leandatainc.com/news.html

I do this to track clicks but you can take the HTML and put it onto a blank website template too, and host it yourself if you are concerned. I do not know of the landing page not being accessible or having a deadline date. (Ony if I cancel Marketo). I believe I can still archive the program, and the landing page will still be accessible.

@Kristen M but I still see nothing about it that isn't safe or surefire.  If it's known to not work in some way, we should file a bug with Marketo, not cast doubt on a feature we actually trust every day.  Also, assuming a PDF is actually saved from that same web page, I don't see how that's easier to digest, or any less ugly; some computers even open PDFs in a separate reader app, which surely isn't easier.

That said, if View as Web Page created PDFs automatically I would probably take advantage of that option for very old emails because they seem more archive-y.

I don't exclude them from my emails, but I guess I just don't see it as being a surefire/safe way to do something. Ideally if someone is attempting to look at an asset, it should be easy to digest and a PDF I think is a better option. It also gives you the option to accurately track how popular that asset is vs. not knowing. Just personal opinion!

Thanks for all the opinions and insight. I had already (sort of) decided to try a variation of Debbie's answer so I'm going to go down that path.

I don't see any reason to trust View as Web Page links for day-to-day marketing, but not for an archive.   Either they work or they don't.  Do you exclude them from your e-mails?

Like Jeff said, emails in Marketo are never deleted. The beauty about cloud based software is the unlimited storage! :)

Are you looking to archive them on your website? I am not sure that I'd trust the 'view as webpage link' unless you test it profusely. It might be better to save the newsletter as a PDF and have them directed to the PDF in their browser when they click the link.

@Sanford W: Indeed, you're right--it looks like the test instance I was using was just hanging on the way to resolving to emailWebview.

@Courtney G: perhaps you mean something else, but View as Web Page links (to http://landingpages.example.com/index.php/email/emailWebview?...) certainly don't require that you be a known (associated) lead when viewing.

The only thing I would add to this is when you use the "View as Web Page" link included with an email is that if you are not cookied as a known lead when viewing the link as hosted by Marketo, you actually won't see anything load. That may be fine--or even desired--if the newsletters are supposed to be gated, but it may be offputting if this is meant for general public consumption.

I'd recommend doing what Debbie suggested, honestly.
