How to add email address with a dash in it?

We have a distribution list email that has a dash in it that we use to send to and I couldn't add it as a new lead.

I tried submitting it via a form and it gave me a validation error as well.

However, I was able to get it into Marketo by manually creating a lead in Salesforce.

What's up with that limitation?
