Is there any way to increase the size of custom object string fields?

Hi.

It looks like the max length of a custom object string field is 255 characters.  Is there any way I can increase this?

Just asked Support about this and they said they cannot fix it.

Ask support, but I would be surprised if this is possible.

Surprising there is no long text field available.

This needs to be addressed ASAP! The fact that you can have longer length on custom objects syncing from salesforce but not custom objects is unacceptable. Thanks!
