Limiting Records with Salesforce Sync

How do I limit what records that get pulled in to marketo with the salesforce sync? If I create a Marketo Sync check box on the contact and lead objects in salesforce and only want the records with the check box checked to sync to marketo, what updates need to be done in Marketo? Also, will that remove records from marketo that were already synced?
