Responsive Email Templates

Hi guys - lots of questions this week.  Still trying to piece it all together!

One thing we are struggling with is we love the Curved Paper email template, but we find it is not readable on Gmail when viewed on a small screen. We've tested it and you can see the whole email in horizontal preview, but it doesn't all show in vertical preview.  Worse, in vertical preview, the sliding bar does not allow you to go to the far side of the email, so you can't view the whole email, at all.

Has anyone else encountered this?  Most of our traffic is on mobile, but a lot of our desktop traffic is on old, small monitors, so this is a problem. We have opted not to use the template, but don't like the looks of the "blank" email in all cases.

Thank you for your ideas!

Hey Jennifer,

If you haven't yet, check out templates.marketo.com for a lot of examples of responsive email templates which you can import to your Marketo instance.

You can check the solutions provided by Marketo partners onLaunchpoint for creating responsive emails that are tested across all devices.

I will say though, Gmail is a pain for responsive design as they do not support media queries, which is how emails are coded to suit different screen sizes. There are some workarounds, but it would be nice if gmail finally got with the times and supported this functionality.

Oh, and we have a way to preview what your template looks like on desktop and mobile, so you always have an idea of how the template will look, depending on the screen size.

Hi Jennifer,

I'd encourage you to try out Knak. Knak is a new product we just launched this week at the Summit. It makes creating responsive Marketo templates simple.

You can create the template you've always wanted, in under 5 minutes, and customize it for your brand, with no coding required.

Then you take the code, pop it into Marketo, and use their WYSIWYG editor to do the rest. You'll never have to look at code again.

I'd encourage you to try it out. The first template is free: www.knak.io

Do you need to have HTML experience to customize the templates?

No HTML required. I couldn't write a line of code to save my life.

With Hubspot, their interface lets you select different smartphone and tablet sizes, as well as desktop monitors, and see how your email or landing page would look on each of them.  It's very handy.

Thanks, Kenny - I'll give those a try.  Is there any plan to make the curved paper template responsive?  That's the one we'd like to use.
